Little Way, Big Love - St. Thérèse of Lisieux
October 1 marks the Feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, one of the Church’s most beloved saints. Affectionately called the “Little Flower,” Thérèse is known not for grand accomplishments or dramatic moments, but for her Little Way—a simple, yet profound path of love that can inspire us today just as much as it did over a century ago.

Who Was St. Thérèse of Lisieux?
Born in France in 1873, Thérèse Martin entered the Carmelite convent at just 15 years old. Her life was short—she died at the age of 24—but her spiritual wisdom has left a lasting impact on the world. In her autobiography Story of a Soul, she described her deep desire to serve God in small, hidden acts rather than extraordinary deeds.
She wrote:
“If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.”
This heart for simplicity and humility became the foundation of her Little Way.
In recognition of her profound teaching, St. Thérèse was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Despite her young age and hidden life, she is one of only a handful of women to receive this title, which highlights the universal significance of her wisdom.
What Is the Little Way?
The Little Way is all about love expressed through the ordinary. Thérèse believed holiness isn’t measured by the size of our works but by the love we put into them. A smile. A patient response. Offering up frustrations in prayer.
It’s about trusting God with childlike faith and living each moment with love—no matter how small.

Why It Matters for Us Today
Life can feel overwhelming. We often think we need to do something big to make a difference—start a ministry, change careers, or take on large commitments. But Thérèse reminds us that the hidden, everyday acts of kindness are just as important.
Folding laundry without complaining. Sending a quick text to encourage a friend. Whispering a prayer for someone who comes to mind. These “little” acts ripple out in ways we may never see.
Her wisdom feels especially relevant in a world that glorifies hustle and achievement. The Little Way invites us to slow down, notice the people in front of us, and choose love in the smallest of things.
A Daily Reminder
That’s why I created a kitchen towel featuring one of St. Thérèse’s most beloved quotes:
“The world’s thy ship, not thy home.”
It’s a gentle reminder that while we’re journeying through this world, we’re made for something greater. Each little act of love steers us closer to our true home with God.
Whether you keep it for yourself or gift it to a loved one, I hope this towel serves as a daily encouragement to walk the Little Way with big love.

St. Thérèse, teach us how to love in the little things. Help us to serve our families with joy, to speak words of kindness, and to trust God with childlike faith. May our small acts of love be great in His eyes. Amen.
