When Prayer Feels Impossible - Lessons from St Teresa of Avila
October 15 is the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila—a woman whose life and writings remind us that even in the struggles of prayer, God is near.

Who Was St. Teresa of Avila?
Born in Spain in 1515, Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada entered the Carmelite convent as a young woman. Over the years, she became known not only as a reformer and founder of new Carmelite communities, but also as a mystic and teacher of prayer.
Her writings—The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection—are considered classics of Christian spirituality. In 1970, she was named the first female Doctor of the Church, recognizing the depth and wisdom of her teaching.
Struggles With Prayer
Despite her reputation as a spiritual master, Teresa was honest about the challenges of prayer. She experienced dryness, distractions, and seasons of feeling far from God. Yet she persevered, encouraging others to do the same.
One of her most comforting reminders is this simple line:
“God walks among the pots and pans.”
It’s a beautiful way of saying that God isn’t only found in lofty moments of contemplation. He is present in the ordinary, daily tasks—in the kitchen, at the office, in carpool lines, and in the messiness of our lives.
Why It Matters for Us Today
Many of us have sat down to pray and felt… nothing. Some days the words don’t come. Other days, we’re too tired or distracted to even begin.
St. Teresa reminds us that prayer isn’t about what we feel—it’s about God’s faithful presence. Even when prayer feels impossible, He is with us. And often, the simple offering of our everyday work—folding laundry, washing dishes, caring for loved ones—can become prayer itself.
A Daily Reminder
That’s why I designed a kitchen towel inspired by her words:
“God walks among the pots and pans.”
It’s a daily nudge that no task is too small or ordinary for God to meet us there.
St. Teresa of Avila, teach us how to find God in the ordinary moments of life. When prayer feels dry or difficult, help us to trust His presence and keep going. May our daily tasks become acts of love offered to Him. Amen.
